2017 Early Offensive Line Rankings

The following rankings are based on the player grades created by PFF. I’m not sure if they have updated all of the starting lineups for 2017 yet because I noticed that a few players listed as starters were incorrect. For example, they have Cyrus Kouandjio listed as the Buffalo Bills’ starting right tackle. While I believe he should be their starting right tackle, right now Jordan Mills is the projected starter. Also, some of the starting lineups are still unknown at this point but these rankings are based on who’s projected to start.

I’m sure some of you are very surprised by these rankings. Keep in mind that several teams like the Cleveland Browns made huge upgrades to their offensive line during the offseason. Several teams like the Dallas Cowboys also lost a couple of key players from their offensive line. Also, these rankings are based on the average grade so take it with a grain of salt. I still believe that the Dallas Cowboys have one of the best offensive lines as they have three players who absolutely dominate defensive lines.

These grades are useful for projecting which runnings backs will be successful in 2017. For example, I will not be drafting Jeremy Hill in any of my leagues unless he is still available very late in the draft. That being said, you have to balance this with talent. Melvin Gordon, Carlos Hyde, and Lamar Miller will still be decent if not great in 2017 despite the grades of their offensive line. Part of that is due to the number of touches they get, though. In 2016 Melvin Gordon averaged only 3.9 YPC but also got a ton of touches and opportunities in the red zone. So again, make sure you factor in other things like talent and their workload when using this to help you rank your running backs.
